My team was approached to make a 2D hand drawn animation for a film. It turned out we were tasked with remaking 8 minutes of some of the worst footage and acting I’ve ever seen. The green screen looked like a toddler’s first YouTube video, and the sound was so blown out you couldn’t hear the dialogue.

Client: I want these scenes to be full of ideas and creativity. Don’t judge the awful sound, all of that will be fixed after you guys (possibly) finish the animations. No budget in mind. Never have done this before.

Believe it or not, the above is a direct, verbatim quote.

I gave them a detailed timeline with an average price for this kind of work. By industry standard animation studios do around 30 seconds per week. Plus, to make all of the assets, backgrounds, and make characters out of the 12 actors, get all of that approved, and then begin the animation, we estimated 17-25 weeks.

Client: This won’t work as I need something in 2 weeks. Movie is needed for release this November. I’ll assume you didn’t check the fandango movie trailer link.

If this was TV, I would look into the camera at this point like on The Office. But it wasn’t TV, it was real life, so I just died a little inside.
