My company, based in Washington State, built a website for a contractor whose business is located down in the San Francisco Bay Area. The owner of the company, who is over 60 years old (god bless him), called me yesterday and we had the following exchange:
Client: Hey, our website’s not working.
Me: Really? Here, let me see if I can pull it up real quick… Huh. Seems to be working fine here. I can see it no problem.
Client: Well, we can’t see it here. It’s not loading.
Me: Are you able to see other websites? Try something like Facebook or CNN or something.
Client: Nope, I can’t get those to come up either.
Me: Okay, well that leads me to believe you’re possibly having an internet outage down there.
Client: (perplexed) But how can it possibly be working for you? How come your internet isn’t down up there in Washington?
Me: Because we’re on a whole different service provider, in a different region than you.
Client: You mean the Internet isn’t just a big ‘thing’ that shuts down every once in a while?
