I’m a young graphic designer who recently graduated.
One of my first clients was a band, which was really exciting – at least at first. It was my first real contract so I was very excited about it despite being underpaid.
I designed their logo, facebook cover photo and profile pic and artwork for their CD. That all went pretty well, but at a certain point they started rejecting everything I did for them, or insisting on their own (terrible) design ideas.
I tried to be professional and prompt with everything, even if they rarely returned the favor, sometimes taking over a week to respond to my submissions. One day I was doing overtime for an agency and didn’t respond to the lead singer’s email for a day and a half.
He didn’t like that.
Client: Look, I don’t care if you’re working somewhere else. If I ask for something I want it right away.
Me: I’m sorry, but that doesn’t work for me. I have been very accommodating, but I have to have priorities.
Client: This is taking way too long. We have a professional relationship; I’m not your friend! I’m your client. If you can’t be professional maybe it’s better if we let you go.
Me: (white hot rage intensifying) I understand you’d like things to be faster, but if that’s the case maybe you should reply to me sooner when I give you something.
Client: You’re a professional. Act like it.
End of conversation. If you’ll excuse me, I need to go scream for three hours.
