So I work for a web development, design and branding foundry in rural Québec, Canada. We’re often faced with difficult clients that don’t understand what we do, or the technology we use.

We recently finalized a launch of a website and get a call from a client:

Client: This website looks TERRIBLE!

Me: (panicking) I’m sorry it’s not up to your satisfaction! There might be a compatibility error, though. Could you send me a screenshot so I can see what you’re seeing?

Client: I don’t know how, or what you’re talking about. Just fix it.

I packed up for a thirty-minute drive to go and visit the client, who brought me into his office and sat me down in front of his computer. It was running Windows ME on a 15" CRT with a screen resolution of 800x600.

This client is a millionaire.

Client: If it looks like this to me, then it will look like this to many, many other people. This is unacceptable.

In the end, we ditched the premium website and built one in basic HTML.

He loved it.
