I’m being considered for a month long
freelance job to design icons for a big company. As part of the on-boarding
process they needed to do a background check. I filled out the background check
forms and submitted all the info requested about my past employment for the
past seven years.
Every day they email me asking for more information gong farther and farther
back in time. Today they want my tax returns, invoices and 1099s from 25 years
ago (!!!).
I don’t have space in my apartment to
store 25 years worth of tax returns and 1099s. I’m also only legally required
to save them for 5 to 7 years. My invoices from 25 years ago were either done
on paper and are now thrown away or were done in a software program no longer
supported by today’s computers. I sent them the files anyway but told them they
would be unlikely to be able to open them. I also told them I had literally
hundreds of clients over the years and could not possibly provide information
on all of them as i can’t even remember most of them.
What kind of morons ask for information 25 years old in order to allow me to
design some simple icons? The weirdest part is that I didn’t even ask for this
job; they recruited ME. This is not a scam. It’s a reputable recruiter and a
reputable company.
This is going to be a very LONG month.
