IGN: Lion Review

If director Garth Davis' Lion ended after the first hour it would be a short feature film, but it would also be a film of immense, nearly unspeakable, heartbreak and yet one full of an equal measure of beauty. The first hour of Lion is the tale of how five-year-old Saroo, a poor boy from India, finds himself lost in the large, diverse, country and unable to find his home again. If this portion of the movie is about Saroo losing his home and family, the second is about him finding it with the help of Google Earth.

In point of fact, this second portion actually functions as something of an elongated ad for Google Earth and while there is still much in this half of the movie to recommend it, the tale of adult Saroo never reaches the emotional highs and lows of the young Saroo story. It isn't bad by any stretch of the imagination; it is just not as astounding and wonderful as what precedes it.
