IGN: The Mighty Thor #15 Review

If I had my choice of any Jason Aaron-penned Marvel comic, a Shi'ar Imperial Guard series would be pretty high on the list. Characters like Warbird and Kid Gladiator were frequently a highlight in his Wolverine and the X-Men run. And while that series is probably just a pipe dream, at least Aaron continues to find ways of working old favorites into his current work. The Mighty Thor #15 kicks off a major new conflict dubbed "The Shi'ar/Asgard War" and it's shaping up to be yet another memorable outing for Jane Foster.

Many great Thor stories show a willingness to blend the high fantasy of Asgard with very ordinary, very grounded character drama. That's one reason the Jane Fosters status quo has worked so well in general, and it's a quality that works in this new storyline's favor, too. This issue opens not with epic spectacle, but with a very quiet showdown between the Serpent and the increasingly sick Jane. This exchange is both worrisome in how it reinforces how stacked the deck is against Jane and surprisingly amusing. Aaron's interpretation of the Serpent tends to be a little too silly compared to the unholy force of nature he was in Fear Itself, but in the context of that scene he works nicely as a foil to Jane.
