IGN: Kamandi Challenge #1 Review

For every great comic work, there’s always someone who thinks they can do it better. What happens, then, when 14 different creators take a crack at one singular property over the course of a single event? The Kamandi Challenge, that’s what. DC’s latest puts the Last Boy On Earth in the hands of pretty much everyone, offering a tag-team, round robin event that’s as structurally unique as it is wholly entertaining.

Often viewed as a bit of a fringe character despite his storied history, Kamandi had taken a bit of a backseat following DC’s Rebirth. And in many ways, that’s what makes the character such a good fit for a unique format such as this, as it allows the multiple creative teams flexibility in catering to audiences new and old alike. The concept is as follows—rather than utilize a sole creative team to detail the characters return, the book will instead feature a whopping 14 writer/artist pairings spread over multiple issues. The kicker, or challenge as the name suggests, is that each team will be tasked with leaving a cliffhanger for the next team to pick up. This isn’t a long form story filled with editorial hand-holding, but rather an open-ended game of comic HORSE that tasks each new creative team to one-up the last. Even better, the afterward of each installment reveals how each team intended for their story to end up, providing a unique bit of insight and, perhaps most intriguing, creative comparison.
